Croatian cuisine…

…is steeped in history and tradition, and nowhere is this more evident than in the coastal region of Dalmatia. With its location on the Adriatic Sea, Dalmatian cuisine is heavily influenced by seafood, which is often cooked simply and with fresh, local ingredients. Inland, the cuisine shifts to lamb, which is cooked over an open flame and seasoned with local herbs and spices.

But Dalmatian cuisine is more than just seafood and lamb. The region is also known for its delicious sweets, including rožata (a custard-like dessert) and fritule (small doughnuts coated in powdered sugar). And let’s not forget about the region’s famous olive oil, which is used in almost every dish and is considered some of the best in the world.

No discussion of Croatian cuisine would be complete without mentioning Prsut, the country’s air-dried ham that is similar to Spain’s Serrano ham. It is cured with sea salt and is often served thinly sliced as an appetizer.

But perhaps one of the most surprising aspects of Dalmatian cuisine is its wine. While Croatia is not as well-known for wine as other European countries, the Dalmatia region is home to some cutting-edge winemakers who are producing wines that are gaining recognition on the world stage. From crisp, refreshing whites to full-bodied reds, there is a wine for every palate.

So when you visit Split, be sure to sample the local cuisine and experience the flavors of Dalmatia. You may just discover a new favorite dish or wine, and the memories of the delicious food and wine will stay with you long after you leave.
